Care: Best in full sun or light shade, keep base and roots completely shaded. "Feet in the shade, head in the sun" is a saying you may have heard for successfully growing clematis, so plant it where the vine gets sunshine, but the roots stay cool. Requires well-drained soil. You can accomplish this with mulch, or by shading the root zone with a nearby shrub or perennial. Prune back to 3 feet as new growth emerges in early spring.
